GWQ3 - THE FINAL RECKONING

Hooray! We made it! We can all now get on with our lives without wandering around Sainsbury's muttering "Cleats? Cleats? Cleats?".

A stirling effort (no pun intended) from you all. A staggering 81 people have scored 40/40. I think that GWQ1 had 8 full marks, and GWQ2 had 5 (is that right? Someone will remember).

Here are your final 10 answers. Good luck.

YESTERDAY'S ANSWERS

31. ST ASAPH (anagram of PASTA in SH)
32. GLOUCESTER (Boom boom!)
33. CARLISLE (CARL Lewis, ISLE of Lewis)
34. STIRLING (Fish LING stir PORRIDGE)
35. BIRMINGHAM (Anagarm)
36. ST ALBANS (BANS after anagram of LAST)
37. COVENTRY (Coven try)
38. INVERNESS (Ern is IN 'VERNESS')
39. HULL (Rod Hull)
40. BATH (The answer was hidden in the post you were reading, in the phrase 'joB AT Hand'.)

OUR WINNER

So, over 80 people scored 40/40, amazing work. But there can be only one winner. And that winner has been chosen at random by a series of friends texting the number 1 or 2 to me (no celebs this time I'm afraid, just the first 6 friends to respond. I think my celeb friends are still asleep)

Congratulations to @kbdmole!

A signed copy of the Pointless Christmas book will soon be on its way to you. I hope anyone else who has enjoyed the quiz might consider buying it too! It's out on October 11th and is quite funny.

THE FINAL CURTAIN

Aaaaaand relax!

Thank you all so much for joining in and making it so much fun for everyone. I also apologise for plugging the book so much (but I do think you'll enjoy it!). You'll find the previous Geeky Wordplay Quizzes in the book. If you REALLY want to put yourself through all this again.

Til next time,

GWQ3 - THE FINAL DAY

So a tougher day yesterday, but still over 50 people have 30/30, which is a great effort. I could be wrong, but I think 40 out of 40 is going to be needed to win the quiz.

In the case of a tie, a winner will be drawn at random, possibly by a celebrity.

But don't forget that not only the overall winner wins a signed copy of 'The 100 Most Pointless Things In The World',; there will also be a copy for one random entrant, and a copy for the winner of today's tie-break.

YESTERDAY'S ANSWERS

21. NEWRY (Newer E)
22 TRURO (True roe)
23. PETERBOROUGH (Peter Pan, Peter Cook, Peter Rabbit)
24. EDINBURGH (Anagram)
25. ARMAGH (Well it made me laugh)
26. HEREFORD (Here Ford. Thanks to @matosman)
27. PORTSMOUTH (Left PORT Opening MOUTH around 1st of Sept S)
28. BRISTOL ('a left tit' would have been an equally valid clue)
29. LEICESTER or WELLS
30. DERBY (The Derby was famously won many times by Lester Piggott, and, it turns out, less famously in the 19th century by John Wells. As I'm accepting WELLS it will now not be used in today's quiz. The clue was going to be 'Fine, Fit and Healthy')

TODAY'S QUESTIONS

Ok, we can't put this off any more, lets get on with the job at hand. Here are your final 10 clues.

31. TWIRL PASTA IN SILENCE
32. WHAT I DID AFTER I GAVE HER AN UNDERCOAT
33. LEWIS
34. FISH PORRIDGE?
35. HMM, BIG RAIN STORM
36. DISALLOWS AFTER FINAL MIX-UP
37. WITCHES SCORE
38. ERN IS
39. AUSSIE BIRD HANDLER
40. HIDDEN IN THE POST

TIE-BREAKER

Can you send me a clue (with answer and explanation) for a city that hasn't been used in the quiz? It can be a clever cryptic one, or a stupid pun one, you know what I like. My favourite entry will win one of the signed books! Please include it with today's answers.

So all entries for the quiz and the tie-break to geekquiz@endemoluk.com by midnight tonight please. Hope you've enjoyed the quiz and are glad it's all over.

A FINAL WORD

This quiz is always a huge amount of work, but so worth it for all the fun messages and the endless amusement I get in writing the clues. Thank you all for taking part and for engaging with it in the spirit in which it's intended.

Your pal,

Richard off Pointless

GWQ3 - DAY THREE

So, some VERY heavy scoring during the first two days, with over 200 people on 20 out of 20. So this could be a big day for our leaderboard.

I hope you're enjoying the quiz. I know that 'taking part' is the real fun/torture, but don't forget there are 3 signed copies of 'The 100 Most Pointless Things In The World' up for grabs. If you want to see a little 'trailer' that Xander and I made for the book, just click on the link below;

Ok, on to the answers to yesterday's questions.

THE ANSWERS

11. CANTERBURY
12. YORK (turkeY OR Kenya)
13. CHESTER (Chest E.R.)
14. EXETER
15. LISBURN
16. BURIED S (S under land)
17. SALFORD (anagram)
18. NEWCASTLE (Cleats an anagram of, and thus 'new' CASTLE)
19. DUNDEE
20. CARDIFF (Funny person =CARD I=I follow on Twitter! = FF)
Anyone putting 'Carlisle' for the last question, much as I love Clarke Carlisle he's more of a 'footballer I follow on Twitter', and also wouldn't require an exclamation mark at the end of the clue.

GWQ3 - THE FIRST 10 QUESTIONS

Hi everybody! Mondays eh? What fun.

Well how about we make Monday even more fun with the start of Geeky Wordplay Quiz 3!

Good idea, right?

I will repeat as I always do, that this quiz is very geeky. Please, please, please don't bother if you don't like weak cryptic clues and terrible puns. I like both, but that's just me.

Ok, a lot of you already know the score, but for the newcomers here's how it works.

1. There are 10 questions below.
2. All answers must be sent to geekquiz@endemoluk.com by MIDNIGHT TONIGHT. Don't tweet any answers. Everyone is usually very good at following this rule. Include your Twitter user name in your email.
3. The next 10 questions (plus the answers to today's) will appear here tomorrow morning.
4. 40 questions in all.

The player with the highest score (and it's always a titanic battle) will win a copy of 'The 100 Most Pointless Things In The World' signed by both Xander and myself.

Two other entrants will also win a signed book; one to an entrant picked at random, and one to the winner of a special tiebreaker later in the week.

THE QUIZ!

Okay, ready?

40 questions in all, the first 10 below.

The answers to every single question this week will be;

CITIES OF THE UNITED KINGDOM

The best thing to do is find and print out a list of all UK cities. It'll make your job an awful lot easier.

As always they are a mix of cryptic clues and fairly poor jokes. If you find that these sorts of questions are not for you, then PLEASE STOP, and consult a physician immediately.

Here we go. Which UK cities are described by these clues?

1. USB UPGRADE
2. JAMIE'S FEELING BETTER
3. ORGAN BANK
4. CONTINUED
5. HOME OF THE CARCHERS
6. LUMPY HOT STEW
7. DEFINITELY NOT A RIP-OFF
8. BJORN, BENNY, AGNETHA AND JAMES
9. COCKNEY CHANCELLOR
10. TWO CLUES

All answers to geekquiz@endemoluk.com by midnight tonight. Remember to include your Twitter user name.

Good luck!!!

Sunday 30 September 2012

GWQ3

Ok, here we are again, the 3rd Geeky Wordplay Quiz!

I will give the same warning that I always do here;

THIS QUIZ IS VERY GEEKY. IT CONSISTS OF STUPID PUNS AND WEAK CRYPTIC CLUES.

IF THAT DOESN'T SOUND LIKE YOUR CUP OF TEA THEN TURN AWAY RIGHT NOW, BEFORE TOO MUCH DAMAGE IS DONE. HONESTLY, IT'S FINE, WE'LL JUST PRETEND THIS NEVER HAPPENED. I DON'T WANT YOU TO END UP HATING ME

HOWEVER, IF YOU DO LIKE THE SOUND OF IT (YOU ARE, PERHAPS, A GEEK SAY?) THEN WELCOME. THIS IS A SAFE PLACE FOR YOU. WARM, LOVING AND NURTURING. AND, OF COURSE, FIERCELY COMPETITIVE.

THE RULES

Ok, for newcomers (yay! newcomers!), here's how this works.

OVER THE NEXT 4 DAYS I'LL BE GIVING YOU 40 CLUES, (THAT'S 10 A DAY MATHS FANS). THE CLUES WILL ALL APPEAR ON THIS BLOG.

ALL ANSWERS MUST BE SENT TO;

GEEKQUIZ@ENDEMOLUK.COM

AND ALL ANSWERS MUST BE RECEIVED BY MIDNIGHT EACH DAY.

THE PRIZES!

The prizes will be;

3 COPIES OF 'THE 100 MOST POINTLESS THINGS IN THE WORLD', EACH SIGNED BY XANDER AND MYSELF.

1 BOOK GOES TO THE WINNER OF THE QUIZ

1 BOOK GOES TO ONE RANDOMLY SELECTED PERSON WHO COMPLETES THE WHOLE QUIZ

1 BOOK GOES TO SOMEONE WHO WINS SOME SORT OF CLEVER TIEBREAKER THAT I HAVEN'T THOUGHT OF YET, BUT THAT WILL PROBABLY INVOLVE A PUN.

THE SHAMELESS PLUG

For anyone who doesn't win, the book will be available in all good bookshops (and bad ones etc) from October 11th, and is available to pre-order on Amazon RIGHT NOW! It's actually better than you'd think.

I'll be revealing the theme for GWQ3 at 10am tomorrow, alongside your first 10 questions.

Good luck one all!
